EBSCO Publishing

Providing research databases to millions of end users around the world

EBSCO Publishing owns and operates EBSCOhost®, the world’s premier for-fee online research service for universities, public libraries and K-12 schools. The company is also experiencing significant growth as an information provider for medical institutions and corporations. EBSCO Publishing provides databases to tens of thousands of customers representing millions of end users. Serving upwards of 100 million daily page views, EBSCOhost stands as one of the most-used sites on the Internet.

EBSCO Publishing provides EBSCO Discovery Service™, a core collection of locally indexed metadata creating a unified index of an institution’s resources within a single, customizable search point that provides everything the researcher needs in one place — fast, simple access to the library’s full-text content, deeper indexing and more full-text searching of more journals and magazines than any other discovery service. EBSCO Discovery Service is part of EBSCO’s Complete Discovery Solution that combines the core discovery layer/index with the federated search capabilities of EBSCOhost Integrated Search™ and the familiar, powerful EBSCOhost search experience. Libraries may also leverage additional EBSCO services to round out Discovery, including EBSCO A-to-Z®, an institutional Web-based resource listing service, and LinkSource®, which provides powerful item-level linking.

EBSCO Publishing is an international company with employees around the globe and customers in nearly every country. The company is the leading provider of research databases to developing nations, and continues with its efforts to bridge the digital divide.

EBSCO Publishing has been successful in providing nationwide information access to many developing countries. This is due in large part to a collaborative effort involving EBSCO Publishing, the various participating countries and their governmental ministries, visionary librarians and leaders, organizations and consortia, scholarly publishers and other societies. For more information, see “Developing Nations, the Digital Divide and Research Databases,” published in Serials Review (Elsevier Science, Volume 31, Number 4, 2005).

EBSCO Publishing’s large content licensing team has been very active and successful in working with publisher partners to enable EBSCO Publishing to provide access to the largest and highest-quality collections of full-text sources via EBSCOhost databases. EBSCO Publishing is the world’s most prolific aggregator of full-text content primarily because EBSCO is the only database provider that is also a subscription agent. As such, interests in expanding access to magazine and journal content through database access and individual subscriptions are aligned with its publisher partners. These strong publisher relationships are the foundation of the unprecedented content availability that customers have come to expect from EBSCO Publishing. The company offers not only the highest-quality journals in nearly every field of study, but also offers by far the most active, full-text, peer-reviewed journals. EBSCO Publishing has added eBooks to its content with the 2010 acquisition of NetLibrary®. eBooks and audiobooks on EBSCOhost will integrate this key content with database content and allow libraries to maximize the value of the eBook and database purchases.

As more and more content is licensed by EBSCO Publishing, existing EBSCOhost databases expand in their depth and breadth, and new products are developed by the EBSCO Publishing Product Management team. More than 300 databases are now available via EBSCOhost.

“EBSCO Publishing is able to offer an avenue for publisher partners to gain supplemental revenue streams and increase exposure in their non-core markets. Because of EBSCO’s unique position as a database aggregator and subscription agent, we share the interests of both the customers we serve and the publishers with which we work. EBSCO Publishing is the natural intermediary between these two groups,” said Melissa Kenton, vice president of Publisher Relations.

The largest group at EBSCO Publishing is its editorial team. The department includes hundreds of highly skilled abstractors, indexers, librarians, subject experts and other specialists equipped with the tools and rules to provide the highest-quality editorial bibliographic records for EBSCOhost databases. The group processes tens of thousands of serials for inclusion in EBSCO Publishing databases, and places a significant emphasis on quality within each step of the editorial workflow. The team has grown and evolved to be highly efficient and effective in its approach to ensuring that EBSCO Publishing databases offer precise indexing and abstracts as well as the database currency that its customers have come to expect.

Not only has EBSCO Publishing been able to grow organically through the creation of proprietary databases, but the company has been very active and successful in its growth endeavors through acquisition. One notable example of an acquisition that has been very important for the company in a number of ways is that of CINAHL Information Systems, the producer of the leading nursing and allied health research database — CINAHL®. EBSCO Publishing has been able to provide the resources for the CINAHL team to expand and enhance its operation, (including the development of additional databases), but moreover, the company has also been able to glean from the high-quality editorial standards and processes that have made CINAHL the leading database of its kind.

Environmentally Conscious

EBSCO Publishing Green Zone As the company continues to grow its product suite and its customer base, it understands that being a successful business goes beyond being an industry leader. This leads into areas of local and global concern. As such, EBSCO Publishing has forged a strong directive to maximize the company’s level of environmental responsibility and encourages its employees to do the same as individuals. With its international headquarters in historic mill buildings on the banks of the Ipswich River in Massachusetts, the company campus shows many signs of its green initiatives, and there are more to come. While some of these endeavors have the dual benefit of reducing costs along with energy consumption/waste, other more elaborative initiatives have long-term environmental benefits that simply cannot be measured in monetary terms. In the spirit of environmental stewardship, EBSCO Publishing believes in pursuing both types of initiatives.
