EBSCO Development Company was formed and began plans for a traditional neighborhood development called Mt Laurel.
The Town of Mt Laurel, a Traditional Neighborhood Development (TND) located near Highway 280 in Birmingham, Alabama, mixes the amenities of today with the charm of bygone years, while respecting the land on which it is built. Elton B. Stephens, Jr., founded the town to emulate the neighborhoods of his childhood.
With spacious, custom homes built to fit every lifestyle — from newlyweds to families to empty-nesters — Mt Laurel’s attention to detail is a cornerstone of the neighborhood. Homes on Mt Laurel’s 535 acres include 21st-century amenities such as underground utilities and high-speed Internet wiring, as well as family-friendly parks, wide sidewalks, Spoonwood Lake, a swimming pool, tennis courts, playground, basketball court, and a dog-walking park. In addition, homes at Mt Laurel are built into the landscape, so trees are never clear-cut, thus preserving the natural surroundings.
At the heart of the community is the Town Center. With everything from a grocery store, general store and even an old-fashioned soda shop, this is the place to meet neighbors, make new friends, and meet your daily household needs. Stones Throw Bar and Grill offers casual dining opportunities. The Town Center offers other restaurants, a fire station and shops, including a bridal shop, children’s clothing boutique, salon services, chiropractics, dentistry, florist and more.
The Town Center hosts community events, including the Farmers’ Market and Craft Fair, Spring and Harvest Festivals, movies on the lawn, shrimp boil and fishing tournaments at Spoonwood Lake, Halloween Trunk or Treat, and Christmas on the Lawn. In addition, Mt Laurel is home to two schools, a private Montessori and public elementary, and three churches — St. John’s Episcopal, Double Oak Community Church and the New Generation Church.
