Innovation

Innovative disposal and conservation techniques are constantly being created within EBSCO divisions. In 2006, Vulcan Industries in Moody, Alabama, changed to a low phosphate, low temperature paint wash system. The change eliminated the need to dump wash holding tanks and significantly reduced water consumption and waste water treatment.

EBSCO divisions seek new, environmentally responsible materials to use in manufacturing products. Carry-Lite Decoys in Ft. Smith, Arkansas, uses second-generation regrind plastic from recycled milk containers to make hunting decoys. Carry-Lite conducted extensive research to find the ideal recycled material for constructing decoys. The second-generation regrind proved to be the ideal material: environmentally responsible, low-cost and just as structurally sound as virgin plastic ore. Over the years, EBSCO divisions have created their own conservation and recycling programs that extend recycling efforts to their customer base. Vulcan Information Packaging pioneered a program called “Vulcan – Partners for a Clean Earth,” to offer its customers incentives for returning outdated or unused binders to Vulcan for recycling.

Several EBSCO manufacturing operations have applied Lean Manufacturing – a philosophy that shortens time between the order and the shipment by eliminating both employee and product waste. By refining the manufacturing process, eliminated waste will be converted into increasing available capacity, reduced cost, improved quality, increased customer satisfaction, and, ultimately, less waste from imperfect technique and work flow.

EBSCO works closely with its divisions and customers to maintain current recycling and conservation initiatives. By monitoring practices and procedures, EBSCO is able to pinpoint and address areas where new green initiatives can be implemented and help ensure a greener tomorrow.
