In August, S.S. Nesbitt & Co., Inc., EBSCO’s Birmingham, Ala.-based commercial insurance agency, acquired LMJ Corporation, expanding its client base and increasing its overall presence in the community.

“Watch out, Birmingham!” said Steve Nesbitt, general manager of S.S. Nesbitt. “With the acquisition of LMJ Corporation, S.S. Nesbitt will now be one of the top five to seven largest agencies in the Birmingham metro area based on sales.”

LMJ Corporation was established in 1996 by Tim Jones and Lana Mawhinney who purchased the former Assurance Agency. LMJ primarily offers commercial property and liability products along with personal insurance products for auto and home.

What made LMJ stand out among the other potential acquisitions was LMJ’s high client retention. “The extremely high retention rate displayed by LMJ is a true testament to the quality of services and products provided,” Nesbitt said.
Like Nesbitt himself, Jones and Mawhinney bring more than 20 years experience and an excellent reputation to the table. The merger will allow each company greater access to markets or insurance companies than they can currently approach; more support and services to provide for clients; claims and loss control and better benefits and employment services for staff.

Nesbitt anticipates a smooth transition for LMJ employees. “There are many transition duties and responsibilities currently taking place to ensure all bases are covered,” he said. “Fortunately, both of us used the same agency management software, which helped to make a smoother transition in merging our databases.

Prior to purchasing Assurance Agency, Jones worked with two major insurance companies, Hanover and Penn National. Mawhinney worked for an insurance agency in Montgomery, Ala.

S.S. Nesbitt & Co., Inc., specializes in commercial insurance and with expertise in a number of industries, including construction, manufacturing, aviation, real estate, student residential facilities, food services and professional services.
